  Season 35 was considered a new era for the show, the newest since 1994. Very few elements remained from the last season, the main one being Nick Berry and Gillian Kearney returning for their third season as The Doctor and Lillian and Colin Brake returning for his fifth and final season as Script Editor. Television producer Jonathan Paul Llewelyn took over the producer’s chair from Stephen Garwood and Verity Lambert joined as Executive Producer and Showrunner. Lambert wanted to have creative freedom over the show, however he soon learnt this was not the case. Gillian Kearney decided she’d like to leave expressing little desire to stay on for much longer, originally they were going to let the character of Lillian live but they eventually decided to kill her off. Producer Stephen Garwood announced his departure in February 1997 as he was going to take over of Eastenders, despite his departure Colin Brake decided to stay on. This seasons writers included Nicholas Briggs, Kate Orman, Steven Moffat, David Banks, Paul Cornell, Keith Topping, Gary Russell and Russell T Davies and the stories included the return of the Sontarans, Feudal Japan, the Vashta Nerada, return of the Cybermen, a planet where everybody accepts their fate, one of the worst Doctor Who stories of all-time, return of the Silurians and The Downfall of the Human Empire. By 1995, Doctor Who was experiencing a wave of popularity it had not seen since the Tom Baker era, with Tony Slattery in the title role since 1991. The show had been impressively saved by Producer Ian Fraser and Script Editor Ben Aaronovitch who both took over in 1991 and left after the 30th Anniversary The Champion of Time aired in 1993.  The reigns of the show were passed onto Producer Stephen Garwood and Script Editor Colin Brake who decided to make the show a lot like Doctor Who's American Rival: Star Trek.Due to Garwood and Brake making the show like Star Trek the show's popularity grew immensely with Slattery's incarnation rivalling Pertwee and Baker, however Griffiths had announced his departure after the conclusion of Season 31 and the Eighth Doctor's final season was now in development.
