Earth Defence: Series Three - 2004

Series Four of Earth Defence aired from January 5th - 9th February 2004 and would’ve been the last season of the show, nothing notable changed during Series One and Two so there is nothing to discuss.

The Days of Our Lives

This story would’ve focused on the question: What if Humans lost the ability to die? We see people all around the world not dying and Earth Defence investigating what is going on and seeing whether they can

bring back death, meanwhile Szydlo tries to form a plan to kill the Earth Defence Agency and we learn his agency (M.I. X) is being defunded. We also see many people saying this is a sign of religion, some believing it to be a blessing and curse, at the end of the story Bernice finds a new element in the human body.

This story focuses on Szydlo and his agency officially being defunded and carrying out a few last missions, we see them deal with numerous groups who commit some of the worst crimes on other people and by the end of the episode Szydlo is shot in the arm but all of his other agents are either burnt,

stabbed or pushed from buildings but due to death not existing they will suffer in agony, at the end of the story Szydlo shoots his boss in the head which puts him in a vegetated state (for now) and is immediately a wanted man.

Eternal Pain

January 26th

By Robert Shearman

This episode sees the team dealing with the society as people have turned against each other and they need to try and stop them, meanwhile Szydlo is on the run from the government we see him reluctantly being helped by the Earth Defence team, we see that laser strikes randomly hit buildings throughout the episode at the end of the story everybody watches a live broadcast on TV, a race called the Volga offer the human race a solution to their problem, they say they will offer the humans death once more if they give them half of the population to experiment on and they have 24 hours to decide or they will cause neverending pain to Earth.

The Crucial Hours

February 2nd

By Joseph Lidster

We see the governments of the world try to figure out what the best option is to bring back death and they note that chaos and disorder has followed in society, we also see that Earth Defence try and find a solution as well as they now know the new element in the human body is from the Volga.

At the end of the story we see half of the population arrive on a Volga mothership but instead of doing as agreed they start to severely injure everyone who they see.

The Nights of Our Deaths

February 9th

By Paul Cornell & Russell T Davies

This episodes sees the Volga committing the worst possible on humans as they put many people through hell, meanwhile Bernice and the agency sneak onboard the mothership and find something known as ‘The Eternal Living Simulator’ but on the way Lewis is poisoned using gas, Alicia is burnt and Lewis falls thrown from a bridge in the ship. Bernice finds the machine but Szydlo puts a gun to her head and says

this will kill her once the machine is destroyed, Bernice kicks him in the stomach and is resultantly shot in the leg as she shoots Szydlo in the head, she then destroys the machine which restores death and Bernice escapes the ship before it explodes.

At the end of the episode Bernice leaves some flowers at a memorial wall which has Tom, Lewis and Alicia’s names on it and then we fade to black as the episode ends.

And that concludes Series Three of Earth Defence, this season was seen as the better season of the show. Overall concludes Earth Defence, it was seen as a very mixed bag of a show with some people loving it and some hating it, the next season is Season 41 of Doctor Who until then thank you for watching and goodbye.
