Earth Defence: Series Two - 2003

Series Two of Earth Defence would have no real or significant change to it during production and the series aired from 22nd February - 26th April.

The Moon Hospital

22nd February

This is essentially the Doctor who story ‘Smith and Jones’, obviously a few things involving the Doctor and Martha would have to get changed to fit the Earth Defence Agency and the ending would be an encounter between Szydlo and the team.

Ghost Town

1st March

The story sees the team travel to Romania after being invited by one of Bernice’s old friends named Yolande to stay for a week, during the opening we learn that a peace conference is being held in Romania, at first everything appears to be a simple holiday the team, however during the night Bernice is attacked by what she believes to be spirits. The next day we see the team explore the area, Lewis and Tom return to the back to the house while Bernice and Alicia meet a man named Christian Abbotly, they return to the house where they meet an American peace envoy for the  conference along with his wife Candice. At the end of the day everyone heads off for the night, Bernice goes to her room where she feels as though something is haunting the house, she goes downstairs and finds Candice dead with her eyes wide open and her hair turned white.

The team set up some monitoring equipment in her room to track the spirits or whatever is causing the phenomena, Bernice is then attacked during the night but is rescued by Lewis and Yolande and after the footage is looked at they find nothing, eventually Bernice discovers that the person behind these attacks is Christian. We find that Christian was planning to use these powers to create the right conditions to frighten someone to death and kill people in the peace conference, in the end Christian is shot dead by Tom during a struggle between Christian and Bernice.

Wonderland

8th March

This story would see the team investigate several disappearances of children, The team eventually find an old storage house where they find the children dressed up like characters from ‘Alice in Wonderland’

and the man who has kidnapped them all is dressed up like the Mad Hatter, it turns out the man is a child killer and is known in the community for being a terrible person, in the end the man is shot dead by Lewis.

Lost Film

15th March

This episode is unique as it’s in the form of the ‘found footage’ format, the episode revolves around a woman named Stephanie Keith who investigates an abandoned science facility which is believed to

contain Extra Terrestrial life and equipment and whilst exploring encounters the Earth Defence Agency and they soon encounter a few aliens who have been in the research facility. The story then becomes a survival story with the team and Stephanie trying to escape, the team do escape but it’s Stephanie who is locked inside accidentally, the end of the episode sees the base blown up and the team getting away as the camera goes static and the final part is not in the ‘found footage’ format as we see Szydlo and his agency find Stephanie who survived and Szydlo explains he can’t have any survivors and shoots her in the head, he finds her camera and then stamps on it.

Hunted

22nd March

This story sees Bernice and the team being hunted by a group of alien assassins who lock them inside their base and try to kill them as they are trapped, the story would be a thriller and in a way is similar to a typical horror movie when it’s all in one setting, in the end however the assassins are killed when Bernice and the team get to their weapon room.

Forgotten Murders

29th March - 5th April

This story would see the team visit a man in Broadmoor hospital who was sentenced to life for murders he committed in 1971, although he admitted to doing the murders he has no forgotten he ever did them and the team think he’s suffering from dementia however an alien parasite bug has infected his brain and made him forget and after they get the bug out the man stabs Lewis in the arm, he then goes on a killing spree and is later killed by Bernice. The episode ends with Szydlo becoming more angry with Bernice’s interference.

Agency

12th April

This story would be experimental as Bernice and the team aren’t in it and it focuses on Szydlo and his

agency, it focuses on how they deal with aliens and what they do after they are captured. We see Szydlo kill witnesses or arrest them and lock them up and we see them torture the aliens they’ve captured.

Invasion

19th - 26th April

This story would see an invasion from the Autons, the episode the Earth Defence Agency trying to stop the Nestene which is under the control of the Master, one part of the story would see the Earth Defence Agency trying to stop the Master and the Nestene and another part would see Szydlo’s agency trying to kill the Earth Defence Agency and handling the situation there way. In the end the Nestene are defeated and Szydlo is shot by Bernice and taken to hospital.

And that concludes Series Two of Earth Defence, it received very similar reactions to Series One, however a few months later the BBC confirmed that Series Three would air in 2004 and would be the last season. The next season is Season 40 of Doctor Who, until then thank you for watching and goodbye.
